Maui invitational names chairman
LAHAINA » Former coach Dave Odom is the new chairman of the EA Sports Maui Invitational.
Odom, who coached at Wake Forest and South Carolina, was chosen yesterday to replace Big East commissioner Dave Gavitt in running the eight-team invitational celebrating its 26th anniversary next month.
Odom took the Demon Deacons — and player of the year Tim Duncan — to the round of eight in the 1996 NCAA Tournament and his teams made the tourney a total of 10 times.
Gavitt remains with the invitational as co-chairman emeritus with former chairman Wayne Duke, who served as commissioner of the Big Eight and Big Ten.
This year's tournament will be Nov. 23-25 at the Lahaina Civic Center.
The field will be Arizona, Cincinnati, Maryland, Wisconsin, Gonzaga, Colorado, Vanderbilt and host Chaminade.
Kim, Oride honored by AJGA
Kimberly Kim of Pahoa and Kelli Oride of Lihue received Rolex Junior All-American notice by the American Junior Golf Association yesterday.
Kim, a freshman at Denver, received the Junior All-American honor for the third straight year.
Oride, a standout at Kauai High School, earned honorable mention and finished the 2009 season ranked No. 43 in the Polo Golf Rankings.
Fanning eliminates Patacchia in Europe
Australia's Mick Fanning defeated Hawaii's Fredrick Patacchia Jr. in the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Search yesterday in Peniche, Portugal.
Fanning outscored Patacchia 18.33 to 8.83 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he defeated Tim Reyes 15.17 to 5.90.
Patacchia finished in a tie for ninth place in the ASP World Tour contest at Supertubes.
Fanning, Owen Wright, Joel Parkinson and Bede Durbidge make it an all-Australian semifinals.
UH golfers shine at Kauai Collegiate
Freshman Alex Chu fired a 5-under 67 yesterday to lead the Hawaii golf team to a second-place tie heading into today's final round of the Kauai Collegiate Invitational at Puakea Golf Course.
T.J. Kua went 67-71—138 in the first two rounds and is tied for fourth going into today's final round.
Chu, who had a 78 in the first round on Monday, entered today tied for 23rd.
San Diego started the final round at 26-under 550, 23 strokes ahead of UH. Ben Murray of San Diego leads the field at 8-under 134 after two 68s.
HPU soccer ranked 10th in West
Hawaii Pacific (9-2-2) is ranked 10th in the NSCAA Division II West Region men's soccer poll. It is the first ranking in the program's history.
