Candies sweeten up post-Halloween treats

Halloween treats go beyond just candy. These recipes will make good use of treats gathered from trick-or-treating. Happy Halloween!

PARTY BROWNIES

4 eggs, beaten
2 cups sugar
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
4 squares Baker's semisweet chocolate or 4 ounces Hershey's Special Dark candy

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease 9-by-13-inch pan.

Thoroughly mix eggs, sugar, flour, vanilla and salt. Melt butter and chocolate. Stir chocolate mixture into egg mixture, mix well and pour into prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Yields 24 brownies.

CHOCOLATE CHIP AND HEATH BAR COOKIES

1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
2-1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 cups finely chopped Heath Bars (or other chocolate-coated toffee candy bars)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or macadamia nuts

Combine brown and white sugar. Add butter; beat well. Add eggs and vanilla; beat until light and fluffy.

In another bowl, sift together flour, baking soda and salt; gradually mix into creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate chips, Heath Bars and nuts. Mix on low speed until well blended, but do not overmix.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets, 2 inches apart.

Bake for 18 to 22 minutes or until golden brown. Yields about 4 dozen cookies.

PEANUT BUTTER CANDY COOKIES

3/4 cup chunky peanut butter
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1-1/4 cups flour (might need 1/2 cup more, depending on humidity)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 bag (13 ounces) Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, crushed

Beat peanut butter and butter at medium speed until well-blended. Beat in sugar. Add egg and vanilla, beating until well blended.

Add flour, baking powder and baking soda; mix at low speed until just combined. Stir in peanut butter cups. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour or until firm.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Shape cookies about 2 inches round and 1/2 inch thick. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.
