llanos, Dibens win XTERRA

MAKENA » Former Olympic triathletes Eneko Llanos of Spain and defending champ Julie Dibens of England won yesterday's XTERRA World Championship, a triathlon that combines a mile ocean swim with 20 miles of mountain biking and a 7-mile run over lava and sand.

Locally, Mark Geoghegan of Honolulu finished third in the 45-49 division and was Hawaii's top finisher in 82nd place with a time of 3 hours, 16 minutes, 58 seconds.

Karen Brisson from Honokaa was the top Hawaii female, placing fourth in the 40-44 division in 3:50:30.

Ed Fattoumy won the physically challenged division for the third time.

 

Hawaii defeats Utah State

Led by Ambree Ako's two goals, Hawaii beat visiting Utah State 3-1 last night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (6-10-1, 2-4-0 WAC) got on the board first in the fifth minute when Kristyn Shapka's header found the back of the net. The Aggies (8-8-2, 3-2-1 WAC) squared the match on Shantel Flanary's goal just a minute later.

Ako's first goal came on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute after she was taken down in the penalty box. Her second score came in the 60th minute after receiving a pass from Kelsie Look.

The Rainbow Wahine hit the road this week to face Boise State on Thursday and Idaho on Saturday.

 

HPU players sweep awards

Hawaii Pacific senior goalkeeper Matt Terry was given the PacWest men's soccer player of the week award after posting a 2-0-1 record last week.

He stopped 14 of 16 shots on goal during the week, including nine against unbeaten Grand Canyon to preserve a 1-1 tie.

For the second time this season, freshman Dyanne Anderson was honored with the weekly women's soccer award.

Anderson tallied three goals and two assists in three matches, including the game-winner in the 106th minute against Grand Canyon.

 

Pinheiro earns PacWest honors

Hawaii-Hilo senior middle hitter Josimara Pinheiro was named the PacWest's player of the week after her dominating performance.

Pinheiro averaged five kills per game and hit .352 with nine errors on 54 attempts during the week.
