Party continues for Wahine

Pretty in pink and pretty efficient as well.
Last night, No. 3 Hawaii wore pink jerseys in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, then wore down Division II Brigham Young-Hawaii at the Stan Sheriff Center. Kanani Danielson had 11 kills and Stephanie Ferrell added 10 to lead a balanced attack as the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team won its 14th straight, 25-14, 25-11, 25-17.
It took only 78 minutes for Hawaii to give coach Dave Shoji his 1,002nd victory and set off an even longer postmatch celebration that included a parade of alumnae representing all 35 of Shoji's teams. The “;Parade of Memories”; also had a musical tribute by current team manager and former player Hedder Ilustre, and a hula by another former player, Raeceen Woolford, the reigning Miss Hawaii.
“;When the WAC has its first hall of fame, Dave Shoji will be in it,”; Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson said during the ceremony.
“;The Rainbow Wahine have raised the level of volleyball in the conference since the time Hawaii became a member in 1996.”;
Shoji said he was overwhelmed by that hoopla that has continued for a week.
“;I gave my speech Saturday, so I'm not going to do this again,”; he told the crowd. “;I was told I was too long the last time.
“;OK, we got the 1,000 wins, but what we really want is to win another championship. So we're back in the gym at 9 tomorrow to work on that.”;
The players groaned, knowing that practice may be harder than last night's match.
“;I thought we played well overall, and didn't drop to their level,”; Ferrell said. “;In spite of the different lineups we were pretty steady.”;
The night went much as BYUH coach Wilfried Navalta expected.
“;We were overmatched, they have so much talent,”; said Navalta after his team dropped to 13-11. “;Our goal was to be competitive and pick our spots.
“;It was just an honor to be here and be part of tonight.”;
The Wahine dominated from first serve, in spite of the number of substitutions that led to all 14 on the roster seeing the court. Hawaii hit more than .500 for the first two sets, finishing at .387 to BYUH's .024.
After Set 2, the Seasiders had a combined eight kills, while three Wahine had as many or more: Aneli Cubi-Otineru (nine), Amber Kaufman (eight) and Danielson (eight).
Losaline Faka'osi led the Seasiders (13-11) with six kills.
Two plays stood out in the routine victory, both in Set 3: Middle Lex Forsythe had her first hitting error in nine matches when being blocked by Hannah Wilkinson at 14-9, and middle Brittany Hewitt set reserve Cat Fowler for a kill to give Hawaii a 22-14 lead.
The Wahine are on the road for three matches, starting Thursday at Fresno State.
Green 2, White 1
Wearing T-shirts printed with “;Serving Up 1,000,”; the alumnae bantered and battled for an hour before the Green pulled out a 27-30, 30-22, 15-13 win over the White.
Players ranged from the early club days (Bobbi Perry, 1963-65) through last season (Jamie Houston and Tara Hittle). Members from all four national championship teams (1979, '82, '83 and '87) were represented, and there were a number of All-Americans, including two of the program's best setters in Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (1993-96) and Kanoe Kamana'o (2003-06).
