Tadd struggles at Q-school

Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa fell hard and fast yesterday after carding a third-round 74 to drop into a tie for 22nd at 3-under 213 in the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School in St. Augustine, Fla.

After opening with a 68 on Wednesday, the Moanalua High graduate has gotten progressively worse with a 71 on Thursday and a 74 yesterday. To move on to the second stage, Fujikawa must finish in a tie for 22nd or better.

He trails leader David Lutterus of Australia by 10 shots after opening and closing with a double bogey on the front nine. Fujikawa had four birdies and two bogeys for the day.

LPGA legends tackle Hawaii

In a year where the LPGA lost every event in the island chain, today's opening round of the inaugural Kinoshita Pearl Classic at Kapolei Golf Course is a welcome site.

The LPGA's Legends Tour event is a two-day, $350,000 tournament that features 35 players, including former University of Hawaii star Cindy Rarick, Jan Stephenson and LPGA Hall of Famers Amy Alcott, Pat Bradley and Sandra Haynie.

The winner of this 45-and-older set takes home $50,000. And while it doesn't match the big-money events found on the PGA Tour, there is no cut and it gives women who aren't ready to hang up their spikes a viable venue.

Wahine soccer loses

Ambree Ako scored 10 minutes into the match, but the Rainbow Wahine soccer team couldn't hold the lead and suffered a 2-1 loss to the Nevada Wolf Pack yesterday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Nevada knotted the score just 25 seconds later when Annabelle Allen's cross went off a UH defender and found the back of the net. Natalie Ratnavira's goal in the 30th minute turned out to be the winner.

The Wahine (5-10-1, 1-4-0 WAC) outshot the Wolf Pack (6-11-0. 3-3-0) 25-6, including 13-2 in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine play their final home game tomorrow against Utah State at 5 p.m. It will be the last home match for five Wahine seniors.

Enos in high spirits

Kai Enos, the assistant athletic director at Radford and former Rams hoops coach, is on the mend.

He should be released from the hospital this weekend after being in critical condition from a surfing accident at Kewalo Basin last weekend, said his son, Hawaii men's basketball walk-on guard Rykin Enos.

The younger Enos has practiced hard with the Rainbow Warriors and remained upbeat since the accident.

“;We just thank everyone out there, family and friends, who've been saying a prayer for him,”; Enos said. “;It's really been helping.”;

UH splits in tennis

Hawaii sophomore Alyssa Nafarette was swept 6-2, 6-1 by tournament top seed Kelsy McKenna at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

McKenna, from Arizona State, is rated No. 7 by the ITA.

Playing in the consolation bracket, freshman Mari Tadaki lost her singles match to San Diego's Lise Marbach 4-6,7-5,3-6.

In doubles action, the team of Nafarette and Tadaki beat Justine Perl and Maja Sujica of San Diego 9-8 (7). They will continue in doubles against Christi Andrews and Leyla Entehabi from USC or Annabel Glendden and Natalia Lozano from UC Santa Barbara today.

UHH volleyball sweeps

The UH-Hilo women's volleyball team improved to 21-1 overall, 11-1 in the Pac West, with a sweep of Academy of Art 25-22, 25-11, 25-22 last night in Hilo.

» Chaminade dropped a 4-set match to Dixie State last night, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19. The Silverswords (4-19 overall, 2-11 PWC) were led by Courtney Lorusso's 18 kills.
