Pasta to be featured at church event

Enjoy a cooking demonstration of two pasta dishes and a dessert, and sample the foods at “;Pasta and Passion,”; a community event at Hope Chapel Kaneohe Bay from 6:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Chef Dean Mishima of Dean's Drive Inn will create the pasta, and Wanda Adams, food editor at the Honolulu Advertiser, will make dessert. Master sommelier Robert Viernes offers wine pairings.

Cost is $15, with an additional $6 for wine. The church is providing child care for $5, which includes dinner and a drink. Call 348-2280.

 

Chefs talk story on 'Island Moments'

;  Television host Emme Tomimbang catches up with former guests chefs Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi, and wine sommelier Chuck Furuya, on her latest installment of “;Emme's Island Moments.”;

Wong will talk about bringing an island-moment luau celebration to the White House; Yamaguchi reflects on his life as a father, restaurateur, businessman and his recent appearance on “;Top Chef Masters,”; and follow Furuya on the road and through his journey into the world of wine.

Also included on the show is a Telly Award-winning segment on Hawaii-born President Barack Obama.

“;Emme's Island Moments”; will show at 9 p.m. tomorrow on KHON2, with a rebroadcast at 4 p.m. Saturday.

 

Sample sweets to aid cerebral palsy

Fifty tasty made-in-Hawaii treats will make up a “;Dessert Fantasy”; to benefit the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii.

Guests will have two hours of unlimited sweet sampling from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 1 in the Pacific Beach Hotel Grand Ballroom, and attendees will be able to vote for their favorite. The 20th annual event will also feature a silent auction and entertainment by Herb Ohta Jr. and friends.

Veal-cooking demo at KCC market

Home gourmet cooks can learn about preparing Hawaiian Red Veal at Kapiolani Community College's Farmer's Market Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.

Student members of the KCC Slow Food chapter will be demonstrating dishes using the meat, including heirloom stew and Vietnamese-style lettuce wraps.

The veal, available at R. Field at Foodland's Beretania and Kailua locations, will also be sold at the market. Red veal is raised and produced on Hawaii island from recently weaned 5- to 6-month-old calves that graze on open pasture. The meat is tender, moist and low in fat.

The market, on the KCC campus at 4303 Diamond Head Road, is open 7:30 to 11 a.m. each Saturday.

 

Furuya tackles pinot noir at tasting

Learn about pinot noir when master sommelier Chuck Furuya hosts a tasting at Vino Italian Tapas on Oct. 29.

“;We will look for finesse instead of bravado,”; says Furuya of the five wines in the lineup.

They include 2007 Dr. Becker “;Estate”; from Germany; 2007 Alta Maria “;Bien Nacido Vineyard,”; Santa Barbara; 2007 Evening Land “;Seven Springs Vineyard,”; Oregon; 2002 Scherrer “;Sonoma Coast,”; Sonoma Coast; and 2006 Aubert deVillaine Mercurey “;Les Montots,”; France.
