Rainbow Wahine add walk-on

Mai Ayabe of Japan has been added to the Hawaii women's basketball team as a walk-on, pending clearance from the NCAA.

Ayabe, a junior point guard, had several bright moments in the D.One NCAA women's summer league in Manoa. She was sharpest of six players trying out over the first three days of Rainbow Wahine practices and coach Dana Takahara-Dias, a former Wahine walk-on, offered a roster spot.

Ayabe went to Kapiolani Community College after graduating from high school in Japan. She raises the count of UH's active players to 13.

“;She brings a lot of quickness and speed, and will make us stronger at the point guard position, along with our returnees,”; Takahara-Dias said.

SJSU's Andrade gets WAC award

Kamehameha product Caitlin Andrade, a freshman setter for San Jose State, was named the player of the week in Western Athletic Conference volleyball yesterday.

Andrade had three double-doubles last week, including a career-high 54 assists and 15 digs in leading the Spartans to their first win of the season.

Enos improving after accident

Radford High assistant athletic director Kai Enos has regained consciousness after a surfing accident Sunday at Kewalo Basin.

Enos, a former boys basketball coach for the Rams, was in critical condition but has improved significantly. He is expected to be moved out of Straub Clinic and Hospital's intensive care unit today.

“;I was there (Sunday) night,”; Radford athletic director Kelly Sur said. “;He was in the oxygen tent (in intensive care). He could recognize us. That was the thing we were worried about because we didn't know how long he was (unconscious) in the water.”;

Enos is a former Kaimuki basketball and football player and father of former Kamehameha standout Rykin Enos, a walk-on hoopster at Hawaii this season.

PACWEST PLACE

UHH up to No. 17

Hawaii-Hilo moved up two spots to No. 17 in yesterday's AVCA Division II Coaches Volleyball Top 25.

The Vulcans (20-1, 10-1 PacWest) won three matches last week to extend their winning streak to four. They are also ranked fourth in the latest NCAA West Region poll.

Concordia-St. Paul (23-0) remained a unanimous No. 1.

UHH's Cabico in third

Hawaii-Hilo's Neil Cabico is in third place after the first day of the Sonoma State Invitational golf tournament.

Cabico shot a 3-under 69.

Teammate Logan Goulding is in 10th place after a 1-over 73, and the Vulcans are ninth out of 15 teams.

Western Washington leads at 1-over 289. UHH is 10 shots off the pace. WWU's Xavier Dailly leads the individual competition after a 5-under 67.

» Hawaii-Hilo's Nicole Aoki is tied for 10th at the Sonoma State Invitational after a 7-over 79 yesterday.

The Vulcans are in eighth place out of nine teams at 58-over 346.

Cal State Monterey Bay leads the tournament at 23-over 311, and Sonoma State's Brittany Carrera is the individual leader at 2-over 74.
