Answer: The murder trial of Joel C. Allen is scheduled to begin next month after a judge last month declared him mentally fit to stand trial.

Allen, 64, is charged with second-degree murder for fatally stabbing 35-year-old Jason Namauu on July 17 last year. Police said Allen stabbed Namauu as the two sat in Allen's car near Cartwright Neighborhood Park in Makiki, then fled on foot when people who witnessed the stabbing intervened.

The court appointed three mental health experts to examine Allen.

He told the mental health experts that he acted in self-defense, according to their reports.

He said that Namauu was an acquaintance and that he met the victim that day, according to the reports. He referred to Namauu as a young woman to one expert.

Allen said the two went for a ride and stopped at the park. That's when he said Namauu started slapping him on the head.

He told one expert Namauu attacked him after a verbal disagreement. He told another expert the attack happened after he saw Namauu with a methamphetamine pipe. He said Namauu's mood changed, and then Namauu demanded a large sum of money from him.

Allen told all three experts he reached in the driver's side pocket for a knife to defend himself from Namauu's attack.

He said that he lost control because of a low pain threshold, especially around his head and face.
