Takahara-dias ready to roll

New Hawaii women's basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias will make her college practice coaching debut today when the Rainbow Wahine open at 5 p.m.

“;The type of tempo we plan to play is very fast-paced,”; Takahara-Dias said. “;We have a lot of intensity, a lot of focus, that's how we will run our practices. There will not be a lot of standing around, there will be a lot of encouragement, motivation and it'll be a productive 2 hours at practice every day.”;

The coach expects eight prospective players to try out as walk-ons; there are currently only 13 active players on the Wahine roster.

Ticket sales brisk for NMSU-UH volleyball

There have been 12 sellouts for women's volleyball in the 16-year history of the 10,300-seat Stan Sheriff Center.

Tomorrow could be the 13th.

Some 3,000 tickets remain for the 7 p.m. contest between No. 3 Hawaii and New Mexico State, what may be the 1,000th career victory for Rainbow Wahine coach Dave Shoji. Shoji, 999-175-1 midway through his 35th season, is on the verge of becoming the second Division I women's volleyball coach to reach the milestone.

Hawaii (15-2, 6-0 Western Athletic Conference) has won its last 11. New Mexico State (11-6, 6-1) defeated San Jose State last night 25-11, 25-16, 19-25, 25-23.

The Wahine's last sellout was Nov. 15, 2003, against San Jose State. It was senior night for All-Americans Kim Willoughby and Lily Kahumoku.

Hawaii continues to lead the country in home attendance for the 15th straight year, drawing 92,514 for 15 matches this season.

Rosenberg gets sole win for UH tennis team

Hawaii's Leo Rosenberg defeated UC Irvine's Ryan Mayer 7-6 (2), 6-3 to record UH's only singles victory at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Championships yesterday in Malibu, Calif.

Hawaii finished 1-2 in singles and 0-1 in doubles. The tournament continues today.

BYU-Hawaii duo reaches final

BYU-Hawaii women's tennis players Yuan Jia and Jenny Chin swept two doubles matches yesterday to advance to the finals at the ITA Small College Championships Division II Tournament in Mobile, Ala.

Jia and Chin, the top seeds in the tournament, will meet the second-seeded team from Francis Marion in the final.

Jia also advanced to the semifinals in the singles draw, beating Darina Berkova of Northwood 6-0, 6-1.
