Hilo woman, 18, dies in one-car accident
An 18-year-old Hawaii island woman died in a one-car crash in Hilo, county police said in a news release.
Police said the victim, Sara Sutton of Hilo, was driving a 2000 Honda two-door sedan west on Maikalani Drive near Amauulu Street when she ran off the right side of the road and hit a macadamia tree.
Police believe the accident happened between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 8:27 a.m. yesterday, when officials got the call.
Sutton showed no signs of life when emergency responders arrived, and was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center.
Police said she was wearing a seat belt. Police also said speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.
Because the accident happened on a private road, Sutton's death will not be included in the list of fatalities this year, police said.
