Body of man found floating off Kahala

A 30-year-old man apparently drowned yesterday, police said.

About 4 p.m., the man's body was seen floating on the water and bystanders pulled him out near the 4600 block of Kahala Avenue, near Hunakai Street, police said.

2 arrested in theft of Wyland painting

Police arrested two people yesterday in connection with the theft of a $700,000 painting from a Wyland Galleries Hawaii last month in Waikiki.

The 38-year-old woman and 45-year-old man, both of no local addresses, were arrested at the state Department of Health on Punchbowl Street about 2:15 p.m. There was no information about their alleged connection to the theft.

Police said the man stopped a blue truck in front of the Lewers Street store, carried out the 24-square-foot painting and placed it into the truck bed about 7:20 p.m. Sept. 6. The woman sat in the passenger seat, police said.

The painting, titled “;Dolphin Dawn,”; was recovered undamaged two days later in Chinatown.

The two were booked for investigation of first-degree theft.

Auto glass business damaged in blazes

A fire at Ace Auto Glass in Kalihi on Tuesday night caused $175,000 in damage, and its cause remains under investigation, said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

The fire was reported at 11:23 p.m. at 2250 Kamehameha Highway in Kalihi.

Four engines, two ladders, one rescue unit and 35 firefighters responded to the alarm and put out a fire in a trash container outside the building. Firefighters also then saw that there was a fire inside the Ace Auto Glass warehouse, as well.

They entered the warehouse and contained the fire by 11:52 p.m.

Firefighters used a forklift to remove pallets and boxes from shelves so they could put out the smoldering fire, officials said.

No one was reported to be in the warehouse at the time of the fire.

Help wanted in finding stolen horse on Kauai

The Kauai Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding a stolen 16-year-old horse.

The horse was taken from a pasture near Halfway Bridge, west of Papuaa Reservoir, between May 5 and Sept. 10, said Kauai County spokeswoman Mary Daubert.

Police described the horse as brown with a white diamond mark on its head and a white left rear hoof.
