Maui robbery suspect is found dead in van

A man wanted for robbery and other charges apparently shot and killed himself last night in a van in Lahaina, Maui police said.

The incident began at about 12:20 p.m. when officers confronted the 44-year-old man, wanted for robbery, car theft and violations of several restraining orders, police said.

Officers heard a gunshot in the van, which was parked near the Lahaina Jodo Mission. Residents on Ala Moana Road nearby and other homes were evacuated.

The police Special Response Team and negotiators arrived on scene, but they could not contact the man despite several attempts.

The Special Response Team officers approached the van at 6:45 p.m. and found the man dead inside, apparently as a result of a self-inflicted wound.

Foodland clerk spies counterfeit $100 bills

Honolulu police arrested a 40-year-old man near the Foodland store in Market City after he allegedly tried to buy food with a counterfeit $100 bill.

Police said a clerk confronted the man Monday night about the bill, and the man ran away a little after 10 p.m.

Police said they located the man nearby and discovered two other counterfeit $100 bills. The man was arrested on three counts of forgery.

Man arrested after he admits shooting at cat

A 26-year-old Waianae man was arrested and cited for cruelty to animals after he admitted shooting at a cat in the Mililani Technology Park with a .30-caliber rifle Sunday morning, police said.

Wahiawa officer Carroll Shifflet said he has been monitoring the area since last month when some women who feed and neuter cats in the area complained that they were confronted by men who were “;hunting”; the cats with crossbows.

On Sunday, Shifflet said he heard a gunshot and found the suspect with a .30-caliber rifle. The man said he shot at a cat but said he missed, Shifflet said. Police found no evidence a cat had been shot, he said.

Shifflet said there has been a situation between people who do not want cats in the area and the women who feed the feral animals.

The suspect, Keahi Kenneth Davidson, was arrested at 8:50 a.m., and police seized his rifle. He was released Sunday afternoon on $500 bond on the misdemeanor charge. He is scheduled to appear in Wahiawa District Court on Nov. 3.
