The state has completed the second phase of the $155 million four-lane North-South Road which eventually will connect Kapolei Parkway, Farrington Highway and the H-1 freeway, improving traffic flow through the area.

The North-South Road diamond-shaped interchange, dedicated yesterday, gives Ewa and Kapolei motorists another way to get onto the H-1 freeway. The new interchange will provide on- and offramps between Kunia and Kapolei connecting to the northern segment of North-South Road.

The first phase, completed in November 2007, involved construction of a 0.8-mile stretch between Farrington Highway and H-1.

The North South Road Interchange opened for drivers who normally face heavy traffic in and out of Fort Weaver Road and Farrington Highway.

The next phase will connect Farrington and Kapolei Parkway.

North-South Road is designed to alleviate traffic congestion at the H-1 interchanges at Makakilo Drive and Fort Weaver Road. It will be completed in early 2010.

Eighty percent of the cost for the new road is being paid by the federal government, with the state's 20 percent share amounting to $31 million, according to state transportation officials.
