The Hawaii men's basketball team has secured its first recruit for the 2010-11 season.

Jordan Coleman, a 6-foot-4 senior guard at Calabasas High in California, has given the Rainbow Warriors a verbal commitment and plans to put his name down during the early signing period next month.

The lifelong resident of the Golden State didn't have any issue with flying across the Pacific Ocean to play college ball.

“;I think about it and, it's far, but it's like the same thing as going to the East Coast,”; said Coleman, who averaged 11.9 points and 4.7 rebounds as a junior. An accomplished leaper, he measured his vertical jump above 35 inches. “;I feel like I'm a versatile guard, athletic guard. I can play multiple positions.”;

Coleman was impressed at the level of interest from coach Bob Nash and assistant Eran Ganot during AAU games this summer and chose Hawaii over Boise State, Southern Utah, Portland and New Mexico.

“;I just felt comfortable with the coaches,”; said Coleman, who has focused exclusively on basketball during high school.

He is a pigskin fan too, and plans to take a visit to UH this month to see the UH football team take on Boise State at Aloha Stadium.

The Rainbows lose a sizable senior class — six players — after this season; Coleman represents one of at least six scholarships UH will have available.

UH opens practice on Oct. 16, with the season opener on Nov. 13.
