UH's Danielson wins wac award

Hawaii's Kanani Danielson was awarded her third Western Athletic Conference weekly honor of the season yesterday.

The sophomore hitter averaged 4.0 kills and .379 hitting in leading the Rainbow Wahine to two road victories last week. She had a career-high three aces in the sweep of Louisiana Tech and a match-high 21 kills in the 3-1 win at New Mexico State.

Also yesterday, Hawaii (13-2, 4-0 WAC) remained No. 4 in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25. The top three also stayed the same — Penn State at No. 1, then Texas and Washington.

Hawaii hosts Nevada on Thursday and San Jose State on Friday.

UH's Rosenberg, Weber advance

Hawaii's Andreas Weber and Leo Rosenberg won their matches to advance to the qualifying draw second round yesterday at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Weber defeated South Florida's Lucas Jovita, the top-seeded player in the qualifiers, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Rosenberg ousted Alistair Barnes of Tulsa, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Both players need two more wins to enter the main draw, in which UH's Dennis Lajola is automatically entered.

Seasiders No. 2 in first poll

The BYUH men's basketball team was the No. 2 pick in the Sporting News Preseason NCAA II poll released yesterday.

BYUH, 27-2 last year, returns preseason first-team All-American Lucas Alves.

BYUH wins golf tri-match

Doug Bischoff shot a 2-under 70 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii over Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade yesterday in a season-opening tri-match at the Turtle Bay Resort.

BYUH posted a team total of 287 on the Fazio Course to beat HPU by five strokes. Chaminade brought up the rear with a 339.

The Sea Warriors' Conner Rumpf took medalist honors with a 3-under 69.

BYUH women sweep tennis

Yuan Jia and Jenny Chin led the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's tennis team to a sweep of the singles and doubles titles at the ITA West Regionals last weekend.

The duo won four matches to take the doubles crown, while Jia won the singles title by beating Vanessa Rebstein of Cal State Stanislaus 6-2, 6-1.

Vulcans drop a spot in poll

One loss, one spot in the poll. That's what happened to Hawaii-Hilo volleyball in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 yesterday. The Vulcans (16-1, 6-1 PacWest), who split their matches at Dixie State last week, went from 19th to 20th.

Hawaii-Hilo is the only ranked PacWest school. Concordia-St. Paul remained at No. 1.

» Caitlin Torres had 17 kills to lead Notre Dame de Namur to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Chaminade yesterday in Belmont, Calif. Freshman Whitney Viveiros led the Silverswords (2-15, 1-7) with 12 kills and 13 digs.

» The BYU-Hawaii women's team defeated Dixie State 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 15-9 last night in its third match in four days.

Sophomore Losaline Fakaosi had a match-high 20 kills to pace the Seasiders (7-9, 4-3). The teams play again tonight in St. George, Utah.

» Academy of Art defeated Hawaii Pacific 19-25, 25-13, 25-18, 23-25, 15-5 last night in San Francisco. Natasha Bell had nine kills and Kyra Pelayo posted a team-high 16 digs for the Sea Warriors (8-8, 5-2).
