Rain slows down Saint Louis
POSTED: Sunday, October 04, 2009
The tables have turned for Kamehameha and Saint Louis.
Kawika Stant returned a fumble—or was it an incomplete pass?—35 yards for the go-ahead score as No. 6 Kamehameha outlasted third-ranked Saint Louis 15-6 last night at rainy Aloha Stadium.
The win vaults Kamehameha into first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings at 3-1 (6-1 overall).
Saint Louis, which was unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the state just three weeks ago, fell to 2-2 in ILH play (5-2). A torrent of rain worsened as the game went on, and the Crusaders' prolific run-and-shoot offense withered. Kamehameha limited Saint Louis to its lowest point total of the season and held Jeremy Higgins to 192 passing yards with four interceptions, including one by Chaz Bajet on a deep pass.
“;We just play against everybody the same way. We're going to bring our defense and you can try to beat it,”; said Bajet, a senior cornerback.

Ryan Ho rushed for 98 tough yards on 27 carries as Kamehameha wore down the Saints and ate chunks of time off the clock.
The key play of the game came while many fans were just returning from the snack bar. On Saint Louis' first play from scrimmage in the second half, Kamehameha lineman Landon Aano wrapped up Higgins on a rollout to the left. Higgins appeared to get a pass off as he fell, and the ball tumbled forward into the waiting arms of Stant. With no whistle on the play, Stant scooped up the tumbling football and raced to the end zone.
Replays showed the ball may have bounced before reaching Stant, which would have made it an incomplete pass. The Warriors thought it was a fumble at first.
“;We thought it was a fumble, but the replay showed the ball bounced off their lineman's foot,”; Aano said. “;That was a pick.”;
That score gave Kamehameha a 12-6 lead—the Statue of Liberty run by Ho on the 2-point PAT was short—early in the third.
Saint Louis' passing game sputtered in the rain. Walter Santiago picked off a Higgins pass on the next play from scrimmage, and later Drew Honda's 36-yard field goal bounced off the top of the crossbar and over for a 15-6 Kamehameha lead with 2:43 left in the third quarter.
The Saints drove early in the fourth quarter to the Kamehameha 30, but Jesse Correa's 47-yard field-goal try was wide left.
They drove to the Kamehameha 19, but Micah Choy picked off a Higgins pass in the end zone to end the threat with just over 5 minutes left.

P.J. Minaya passed for 279 yards and four touchdowns as the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-2) overcame a productive ground attack by the Firebrands (0-5, 0-4).

Jesse Carney ran for 249 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs over Na Koa.

McKinley was held to 87 yards of total offense in the loss.
Pearl City 35, Kalani 12
Isaac Shim connected with Kelson Laboy for two touchdowns, as the Chargers crashed the Falcons homecoming.
