Wie in contention at Navistar

Honolulu's Michelle Wie remained in contention at the Navistar LPGA Classic, shooting a 2-under 70 yesterday for a 36-hole total of 8-under 136.

Wie is tied for seventh and trails second-round leaders Lorena Ochoa (68), Yani Tseng (63), Giulia Sergas (65), 14-year-old amateur Alexis Thompson (69) and Laura Davies (65) by two shots entering the weekend of this LPGA event played at the RTJ Golf Trail in Prattville, Ala.

The Punahou School graduate hit six of 14 fairways and 15 greens in regulation, averaging 278 yards off the tee. She needed 32 putts.

Chaminade gets rare win in volleyball

Junior setter Tayna Alvino had 45 assists and 19 digs as Chaminade beat Dominican University yesterday in five games in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Silverswords won 25-20, 21-25, 21-25, 25-20, 17-15. Freshman Whitney Viveiros led the Silverswords with 16 kills and 24 digs.

The team out-dug the Penguins 114-105 and out-hit them .169-.164. The Silverswords improved to 2-13, while Dominican dropped to 3-13.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Grand Canyon 25-23, 25-15, 22-25, 25-19 yesterday. Freshman Kylee Nawahine led the Seasiders with 15 kills, while Tanza Buroker added nine kills and nine blocks.

Grand Canyon's Megan Toth had 14 kills and Laurann Durbin had 26 digs. The Seasiders play the Lady Antelopes again today.

» Julia Gruszeka and Natasha Bell each had 11 kills, but Hawaii Pacific fell to Notre Dame de Namur 25-22, 25-22, 25-20 in Belmont, Calif.

The Argos improved to 6-13 and 4-2, while the Sea Warriors fell to 7-7 and 4-1.

Vulcans basketball team will remain on campus

For the upcoming basketball season, Hawaii-Hilo will play all of its home games in its campus gym.

The gym has nearly 1,000 seats, ample parking and is within walking distance for students. UH-Hilo teams have been playing at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
