Art exhibit to help symphony

Kelly Art Hawaii and the Honolulu Symphony announced the opening of an art exhibit called “;Impressions of An Era: The Art of John Kelly,”; at the Pegge Hopper Gallery.

The exhibit, which opens Oct. 21, showcases pieces of art never seen in public. The art will be made available for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Honolulu Symphony.

The showing coincides with the upcoming release of the Honolulu Academy of Art's new book, “;John Melville Kelly: Hawaiian Idyll.”; Written by Natasha Roessler and designed by Barbara Pope, the book catalogues Kelly's work from a 2005 exhibit.

“;With the help of Grandma Kate's artistic eye, my grandfather worked so hard at his printmaking, often creating methods that were new and rare in his era,”; said Kelly's granddaughter Colleen in a news release. “;They are stunning, and we're very proud and excited to be sharing them.”;

Pick up Korean dance and chants

Learn more about Korean culture and dance at free workshops offered at the University of Hawaii. On Wednesday the Outreach College presents a dance workshop from 11 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in UH-Manoa's dance building.

Students learn actual movements from one or two dances and about the role of dance in Young San rituals.

From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., participants will receive hands-on training in the Pomp'ae (scared chanting) workshop in a campus music building.

The Korea Society also presents “;The Sound of Ecstasy and Nectar of Enlightenment: Buddhist Ritual Song and Dance from Korea”; at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kennedy Theatre. Ancient chants, drum and cymbal dances and the costumed “;Butterfly Dance”; will be showcased at the concert.

The Young San ceremony is normally performed over the course of three days and is one of the most elaborate Buddhist rituals, involving offerings of flowers, fragrances, music and sacred dance in honor of Buddha.

Breast cancer info on Ask.com

In connection with October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Internet search engine Ask.com is featuring new home-page themes called “;skins,”; which are designed to educate consumers about breast cancer. The skins display a weekly series of questions that relate to breast health and breast cancer issues.

The organization will donate up to $100,000 based on site participation.

Ask.com has pledged to invest at least $1 million by Dec. 31, 2010, through this program and sponsorship of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Ask.com's Search for the Cure program makes it possible for people who lack funds or time to contribute to the fight against breast cancer.
