Sailboat carrying 2 people rescued near harbor entry

Firefighters rescued a sailboat drifting with engine problems about a mile offshore of Honolulu Harbor.

The sailboat, which was carrying two people, was heading toward Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor yesterday when it began drifting near the entrance to Honolulu Harbor at about 3:15 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

A fire rescue boat towed the vessel back to shore, Seelig said. No one was injured.

Blaze at St. Louis Heights home kills unlucky pooch

A long-haired Chihuahua named Lucky died while another dog survived without injuries yesterday in a fire in that caused $200,000 in damage to a St. Louis Heights home.

Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the rear of the two-story home at 1628 Bertram St. shortly before 1 p.m., said Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig.

As firefighters were fighting the blaze, the homeowners returned and said their two dogs were still inside, Seelig said.

Firefighters found the surviving dog—a terrier mix called Rocky—in a room with a closed door and Lucky dead in the living room, which had the highest concentration of smoke and toxic gases in the house.

Christopher Tran, who lives at the house, said firefighters told him the stove had been left on.

The fire was extinguished by 1:22 p.m. No one was injured.

Big Island police have charged a 19-year-old Puna man after he allegedly escaped from police custody Wednesday.

Andrew K. Silva was charged Wednesday night with escape, theft of a credit card and fraudulent use of a credit card. He was being held at the Hilo cellblock in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Police said Silva was seen on a surveillance video using a stolen credit card at a Puna convenience store.

He was arrested Wednesday and allegedly escaped while en route to the Hilo cellblock, police said. Officers located him later that day on Osorio Lane.
