Students' furniture designs showcased

The University of Hawaii School of Architecture is currently home to the exhibit “;Furniture Design at UH: An Exhibition of Furniture Designed by Students in the School of Architecture.”;

On view are 39 pieces created by students of associate professor Leighton Liu over the past five years. They include benches, tables, chairs and lighting fixtures by students in both first-year and advanced design studio classes. All are original designs conceived and fabricated by the students.

Because architecture is one of the only arts in which the designer rarely constructs the final product with his or her own hands, the furniture is an attempt to address the need for hands-on learning about materials and methods of construction.

A reception will take place 6 to 8 p.m. next Thursday. The exhibition will continue through Nov. 2 in the Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery (Room 204) at the school on the UH-Manoa campus. The show will be open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Admission is free.

Father Damien honored with Reyn's shirt

Reyn Spooner has collaborated with Big Island artist Dietrich Varez to introduce a limited-issue shirt, the third in a series of designs honoring Father Damien. The Belgian-born Sacred Hearts priest dedicated his life to the care of Hansen's disease patients on Molokai more than a century ago.

The design is available at Reyn's stores in Ala Moana Center and Kahala Mall, offered in Spooner Kloth with the classic Reyn's button-down collar, and pullover style in navy, red, tan or black, at $79.

Varez will be at Reyn's Ala Moana from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to meet customers and sign shirts prior to Father Damien's canonization on Oct. 11.

Retro chic at Princesse Tam-Tam

Before Victoria's Secret, women's needs for lingerie were being met by a number of department stores, discount outlets and specialty boutiques, each filling its own niche.

Those with a taste for luxury lingerie from Paris, for instance, will continue to find it at Princesse Tam-Tam (922-3330) on the third floor of Royal Hawaiian Center and Ai Amour Luxury Lingerie (922-5683) on the ground floor of the center.

Princesse Tam-Tam is welcoming a new collection called The Pop & Wizz Factory, inspired by Andy Warhol and the sexy glamor of British rock 'n' roll of the 1960s. The underpinnings are marked by deconstructed lines, a mix of chic and shock for day and night, plus a combination of delicacy and unruliness.

Meanwhile, Ai Amour is welcoming the first portions of the Fall-Winter 2009-10 collection from Off Limits by Parah. The Italian lingerie brand is noted for a combination of sophistication and superb fit with youthful flair and affordability. Supplies are limited.

Creative fundraiser for cancer

Local crafters will be showing their handmade Artful Bras from 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday at Richardson Field, preceding the American Cancer Society's “;Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”; fundraising walk and fair.

It'll be your first chance to see the Artful Bras before they are auctioned at the Hard Rock Cafe-Waikiki on Oct. 24. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Hawaii Breast Cancer Society.

If you do plan to place a bid, note that for whatever reason, the bras are a uniform and generous 36C!
