The Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, the University of Hawaii-West Oahu and the federal government are building a new treatment center for people dealing with substance abuse.

The Malama Recovery Center broke ground last week at the Waianae center, and construction is expected to be completed next year.

The facility is funded by an $800,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The grant will also pay for service learning programs at UH-West Oahu for students working toward a certificate in substance abuse and additional studies.

“;The development of the Malama Recovery Center represents our continuous efforts to build and restore lives,”; said Dr. Ric Custodio, medical director at the Waianae health center.
