UH football to be feted for 100 years

Retired NFL coach Dick Vermiel is slated as keynote speaker at a dinner celebration of the 100th anniversary of University of Hawaii football.

The event, Dec. 2 at the Sheraton Waikiki, includes a silent auction of sports-related memorabilia and travel packages.

Individual tickets are $300, and tables are available for $2,500-$10,000.

Bartels advances in Australia ASP

Hawaii surfer Melanie Bartels won her first-round heat yesterday in the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic surf contest in Sydney, Australia.

Bartels scored 15.25 out of a possible 20 points to beat Amee Donohoe and Rosanne Hodge. She advanced to the third round of the Association of Professionals Women's World Tour event.

HPU wins road volleyball match

Caitlin Torres put down 18 kills to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 15-12 win over host Notre Dame de Namur in a Pac West volleyball match last night at Belmont, Calif.

Breanna Morales added 11 kills for the Sea Warriors (6-6, 3-0, Pacific West Conference).

Julia Gruszecka paced the Argonauts (4-13, 2-2) with 12 kills.

» Academy of Art knocked off visiting Chaminade 25-14, 25-20, 25-22 in San Francisco. Dan Yang led the Urban Knights (13-4, 2-2) with 20 kills and 19 digs. Chauntelle Maduli had 11 kills and 15 digs for the Silverswords (1-12, 0-4).

» Kawena Cubi-Otineru posted 16 kills as Hawaii-Hilo came back to beat host Grand Canyon 27-29, 25-23, 25-20, 25-18, in Phoenix.

Megan Toth led GCU (9-5, 0-3) with 12 kills. League-leading UHH improved to 14-0 and 4-0.

Dixie State captures golf tournament

Kyle Chappell defeated teammate Cameron Crawford for individual honors as Dixie State University came from 10 strokes back to win the Western Washington University Invitational at Bellingham, Wash.

Chappell shot 7-under 65 and Crawford a 69 yesterday to tie at 8-under 208 after 54 holes.

Dixie State finished 9-under as a team. Hawaii-Hilo was fifth at 3-over, Grand Canyon was seventh at 8-over and Notre Dame de Namur was 11th at 54-over.

Kaheaku-Enhada in fine company

Former Kapolei and Navy athlete Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada is among three Midshipmen named to the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial All-Stadium Team as quarterbacks this week.

Kaheaku-Enhada, who completed his Annapolis career last year, is joined by Roger Staubach and Chris McCoy. They and other Navy stars will be honored at halftime of Saturday's game against Air Force as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Navy's home stadium.

Kaheaku-Enhada is the only quarterback to lead Navy to three victories over Army. He also directed the Midshipmen to three bowl games, three NCAA rushing titles and three consecutive Commander-In-Chief's trophies.

He and Staubach are the only Navy quarterbacks to beat Notre Dame in the past 45 years.

The all-stadium team was chosen half by fan voting and half by a committee.

Mona Kim won her fifth Hawaii State Women's Golf Association senior championship Monday at Kapolei Golf Course.
