A 22-year-old man said his loneliness due to his traumatic childhood is the reason he had sex with a 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl.

A rambling Jon Joseph Rutherford said in state court yesterday, “;This is a perfect example why I shouldn't date younger girls.”;

Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall sentenced Rutherford to 15 years in prison yesterday for sexually assaulting both girls.

She had sentenced him to probation in the first case in December 2007.

He made contact with the second girl a month after his release, said Thalia Murphy, deputy prosecutor.

When police started looking for him for failing to meet with his probation officer, failing to register with the state as a sex offender and for sexually assaulting the second girl, he had fled the state.

Authorities caught up with him in Montana and returned him to Hawaii.

He pleaded guilty in the second case last July and agreed to be resentenced in the first case.
