The YMCA of Honolulu and Hawaii County plan to offer one-day programs on the public schools' scheduled furlough days, beginning Oct. 23.

Registration starts next week but no date has been specified.

People may register online or in person at a YMCA.

All-day programs will include homework time and guidance, enrichment projects and recreational and sports-related activities, the group said.

Locations include Central, Kaimuki-Waialae, Kalihi, Leeward, Mililani, Nuuanu and Windward YMCA branches, and the YMCA Camp Erdman on the North Shore.

Rates and hours vary.

YMCA officials said they are working with state education officials to expand programming to school site facilities.

On the Big Island, Mayor Billy Kenoi said he plans to open gyms, community centers and other recreational facilities and to hire A+ after-school workers to operate a child-care alternative from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Kenoi said parents would pay a fee of $5 to $10 per child per furlough day to cover some of the costs. The program is modeled after the Summer Fun program, which has one adult supervisor per 20 children.
