Maybe it's the weather, maybe it's something in the water, but Hawaii has a lower rate of divorced residents than all but three states, according to recently released Census figures for 2008.

About 9.1 percent of isle residents were divorced. That puts Hawaii in a tie with Massachusetts and behind North Dakota (8.1), New Jersey (8.2) and New York (8.4).

Nevada had the highest percentage of divorced residents at 14.2 percent, followed by Maine (13.6) and Oklahoma (12.9).

Of Hawaii residents over 15 years old, 50.6 percent were married, 6.4 percent widowed, 1.2 percent separated and 32.6 percent never married.

Hawaii's divorce rate in 2008 is slightly lower but not much different from previous years. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey calculates that 9.4 percent of Hawaii's residents were divorced over the three-year period between 2005 and 2007.
