University of Hawaii math professor David A. Stengenga was indicted by an Oahu grand jury yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting a girl over a six-year-period.

Stengenga, 63, was indicted on seven counts of first-degree sexual assault and five counts of third-degree sexual assault.

The incidents occurred between 1999 and 2005, when the girl was 7 to 13 years old. Now 17, she reported the assaults to police earlier this month.

The assaults sometimes occurred two to four times a week, with Stengenga allegedly using his mouth and fingers.

The girl told police that when she was about 8 or 9 years old, Stengenga, described as a family friend, would hold her by the waist and, through her clothes, rub his genitals against her after showing her digital images on his home computer of animals mating, according to court documents.
