American Airlines is restoring its daily Chicago-Honolulu nonstop route from O'Hare Airport after pulling the plug on it in January.

The company said as part of a broader restructuring announced yesterday that it will add the service this spring in a move designed to concentrate on its hub airports, shift capacity from other airports and return to profitability.

American currently has 12 daily flights to Hawaii from the mainland. It flies to Honolulu from Los Angeles (four times daily), Dallas-Fort Worth (twice daily) and San Francisco (once a day). It also flies twice a day to Kahului from Los Angeles and once from Dallas-Fort Worth, and once daily to both Kauai and Kona from Los Angeles.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based company cut its Honolulu-Chicago flight earlier this year to save operating expenses by reducing capacity amid rising fuel prices.
