Grant lifts UH-Hilo pharmacy school
The University of Hawaii-Hilo's College of Pharmacy will expand graduate programs and establish a physical therapy degree program with $951,000 in federal funding.
U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, announcing the grant, said College of Pharmacy students “;are able to take advantage of the best that Western science, Eastern traditions and native Hawaiian heritage has to offer as they explore the healing arts.”;
UH-Hilo will use some of the federal funds to develop a clinical pharmacist training and supply model for Hawaii's rural and underserved areas and create a general practice pharmacy residency program and drug information and medication therapy management center.
Volunteers sought to aid in pet care
The Hawaiian Humane Society is seeking volunteers to help manage pet care at shelters during emergency situations such as hurricanes.
Training sessions will begin Saturday for individuals and community groups. Their responsibilities would include registration of pets and their owners, animal and kennel care, setting up and disassembling shelter facilities, and communicating with government and Red Cross members working at emergency shelters.
