The state Health Department is seeking a $43,500 fine from the Chevron Hawaii Refinery for alleged water quality violations.

The Clean Water Branch issued a notice of violation for the alleged discharge of red-colored effluent from the refinery's foul-water treatment plant into the ocean between April 24 and 29, according to a news release.

The violation was discovered April 27 during an inspection of the facility. Warning signs were posted along the waterfront after the discovery.

Chevron spokesman Albert Chee said the company has taken action to prevent a similar incident from happening again. He said tests from an independent lab confirmed that the discharge was not toxic, and there have been no reports of any environmental damage.

Chee said the company is reviewing whether to appeal or ask for a hearing on the notice of violation.

“;We strive to operate our facility safely and with a focus on not creating any impacts to the environment,”; Chee said.
