Tiger sharks' sightings close 2 west Maui bays
Officials closed Honolua Bay and Mokuleia Bay in west Maui yesterday morning after two 12- to 16-foot tiger sharks were spotted in the area.
The sharks were seen feeding on fish and the bays were closed about 10 a.m. for about two hours, a Maui county news release said.
Big Isle man drowns while picking opihi
An opihi picker drowned and three people were rescued from a capsized boat near Keahole Point in separate incidents in Kailua-Kona yesterday, the Big Island fire department said.
The 44-year-old Kailua-Kona man was found floating face down about 25 yards offshore north of OTEC Beach after friends called for help, fire Capt. Richard Fong said. He had no vital signs when a fire helicopter reached him about 2 p.m., Fong said. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
About 10 a.m., two adults and a 10-year-old child were rescued about half a mile from Keahole Airport after their 12-foot Boston Whaler capsized, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.
Gun-wielding suspect sought in store robbery
Police are searching for a gunman who robbed a Kailua liquor store yesterday.
About 8:30 a.m., the man entered the Keolu Street store with a firearm and demanded money, police said. The man fled with some cash.
Police described him as 5 feet 5 inches tall with a thin build, wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored sweatshirt with a hoodie covering his face.
