Wie trails by 5 in arkansas

Honolulu's Michelle Wie opened with a 2-under 69 yesterday at the P&G Beauty Arkansas NW Championship at the Pinnacle Country Club in Rogers, Ark. She is tied for 21st and trails first-round leader Sandra Gal (64) by five shots.

The Punahou School graduate carded five birdies and three bogeys for her up-and-down round. She began the day with three consecutive birdies before bogeying the par-4 fourth.

» At the Nationwide Tour's Utah Championship, Hawaii's Tadd Fujikawa fired a 3-under 140 for two rounds, missing the cut by a stroke.

Vulcans stop Seariders in soccer

UH-Hilo turned back Brigham Young-Hawaii 1-0 in the Hawaii Challenge Cup at Hilo yesterday.

The host Vulcans' Vincent Muscarella scored on a corner kick 3 minutes into the second half for the game's only score at Amauulu Field.

UH-Hilo (1-4) notched its first win of the season to advance to today's tournament championship match against Hawaii Pacific. BYUH fell to 0-2 and will play Chaminade in the tourney's consolation match.

 

Sea Warriors top Silverswords

Hawaii Pacific beat Chaminade 3-1 in the opening match of the Hawaii Challenge Cup at Hilo yesterday to advance to the tournament title game.

Max Anton, Jim Terry and Kainoa Kahui scored goals for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 2-0. Charles (Chad) Thompson scored the lone goal for Chaminade, which dropped to 1-1.
