No. 10 Leilehua 14, Kapolei 10

The Man-child has struck again.

This time, Andrew Manley's new accomplice is one of the few returnees in Leilehua's air force. Manley fired a strike to Kamana Akagi, who raced down the sideline past three defenders for a 50-yard touchdown play with 7:47 left to give the Mules a 14-10 win over Kapolei last night.

Tenth-ranked Leilehua improved to 1-1 in the rough Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West (2-2 overall). Kapolei fell to 1-2 in league play (2-3).

Akagi, a senior listed at four positions on the team roster, hauled in 11 passes for 177 yards. None was bigger than the long touchdown play, which came on fourth and 3 at midfield.

“;The DB did a great job, but our quarterback and wide receiver made a great play,”; Mules coach Nolan Tokuda said. “;That got the crowd out of it.”;

Kapolei's next two possessions went backward and ended with punts. The 'Canes had one last chance with 1:29 to play, but Donnie King muffed a punt on the return and Devin Fontanilla recovered for Leilehua at the Kapolei 27-yard line. From there, the Mules ran out the clock.

Tokuda was relieved, especially since his team's first win in conference play came at Kapolei. He had not won on the Hurricanes' field as a head coach.

“;Kapolei's a great team. We gave them opportunities to make plays. Fortunately, we made a few more plays,”; he said.

The Hurricanes defense bent without breaking in the first half. Defensive tackle Cyril Maluina stripped the ball from Manley on a wild scramble outside the pocket and Tuu Lolohea recovered to end the Leilehua threat.

Leilehua's defense was formidable, too. Kasey Dukes picked off a pass by Noah Pascua in the red zone late in the first quarter.

A 38-yard field goal by Eric Morales gave Kapolei a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes left in the second quarter.

Shaydon Akuna, back from nagging leg injuries, intercepted a Manley pass at the Kapolei 20-yard line, ending another Mules threat. That play was triggered by Lolohea's blitz from the edge.

Morales lined up for a 34-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the half, but Nate Schuster blocked it at point-blank range. The ball bounced toward Leilehua's end zone, but the Mules fell on the ball near midfield instead of running it in.

Leilehua's defense forced a fumble by Kapolei fullback Keaka Fernandez early in the third quarter, but failed to capitalize. However, after a a Dillon Pau'u interception, the Mules drove 66 yards in eight plays. Manley got hot, hitting Akagi for four completions in a row before connecting with Blaine Furtado on a 15-yard catch and run to the end zone.

The Mules' first score made it 7-3 with 4:49 to go in the third.

After a 14-yard Leilehua punt, Kapolei regained the lead with a five-play, 40-yard drive to start the fourth stanza. King's 20-yard pass from Elijah Tagura on a double-reverse pass pushed the 'Canes ahead 10-7 with 9:51 remaining. The lead lasted just 2 minutes, though, before the Mules struck for the go-ahead touchdown.

Leilehua overcame 13 penalties for 95 yards.

Roosevelt 36, No. 8 Castle 14

Roosevelt quarterback Matthew Lono-Holani passed for 288 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rough Riders over No. 8 Castle on homecoming night.

Ese Tago caught eight passes for 133 yards and two scores at Ticky Vasconsellos Stadium, getting the Rough Riders seniors their first homecoming win.

No. 3 Mililani 35, Campbell 14

Quarterback Trent McKinney ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as the Trojans overwhelmed the Sabers.

Samson Anguay scored a pair of long touchdowns (an 82-yard kick return and a 56-yard run) for Campbell.

Aiea 25, Anuenue 22

Na Alii came out strong and held on late in an OIA White match-up.

Aiea jumped out to a 25-7 lead afer three quarters only to see Anuenue put up 15 points in the final quarter and give Na Alii a late scare. Chucky Kaahanui led the air attack for Aiea passing for 246 yards on 13-for-19 passing and four touchdowns.

Kekoa Thompson was on the receiving end of six of Kaahanui's passes, three of which he took in for touchdowns in addition to the 181 yards.

Kailua 13, Kaimuki 7

Clint Aina ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns as the Surfriders defended their home field and kept the Bulldogs winless.

Aina had scoring runs of 19 and 66 yards in the third quarter as Kailua improved to 3-2 overall (2-1 OIA Red East). A 71-yard scoring toss from Eddie Char to Chester Su'a was the lone highlight for Kaimuki (0-4, 0-2).

Moanalua 28, Pearl City 25

The Menehunes took out the Chargers with a late score to win a back-and-forth OIA White contest.

Moanalua got things going right out of the gate with a 95-yard kick off return by Essaye Villaver to give the Menehune the early 7-0 lead. Pearl City grabbed the lead back in the third quarter, but Moanalua, led by Tahje Canyon and his 242 total yards and three touchdowns, came back to steal the game.
