Scuba diving accident off Waianae fatal to man

A man died after he got into trouble while scuba diving off the Waianae Coast.

The Medical Examiner's Office said the cause of death was drowning from a scuba diving accident. Other significant conditions were deferred. The Medical Examiner's Office did not release the man's identity.

Paramedics were called to the Waianae Small Boat Harbor at 1:22 p.m. Thursday to aid a man who appeared to be in his 70s, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

The victim had been scuba diving in about 100 feet of water when he got into trouble. His companions were able to get him into the boat, and they began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

City paramedics treated him and took him to a hospital. Cheplic said the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

$220,000 fire is under investigation on Maui

Maui police were investigating an intentionally set fire that did an estimated $220,000 in damage to a building and its contents in the Wailuku Industrial Park.

The fire at 261 Hookahi St. on Tuesday morning caused smoke and water damage to Aikane Auto Repair and water damage to DeCoite Custom Cabinetry, police said.

Police Lt. Tim Gapero said yesterday that police found out that $25,000 worth of equipment was missing from Aikane Auto Repair. Gapero said he did not know when the burglary took place.

Girl, 16, says neighbor sexually assaulted her

A 16-year-old Waianae girl reported that a 35-year-old neighbor sexually assaulted her, police said.

Police said the sexual assault allegedly occurred between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m. Thursday, and the man had fled before police arrived. Police said yesterday the man has not yet been arrested. The case is classified as second-degree sexual assault.
