DJ Keoki welcomed home at Hush

It was a family affair at HUSH Boutique Nightclub and Ultralounge last weekend, when Hawaii-based brothers DJ Maleko and Miko Franconi welcomed Superstar DJ Keoki back to the islands for his first gig here in nearly four years.

“;We all love this nightlife (stuff),”; said Maleko, who in addition to co-hosting mornings on Hot 93.9 is one of the most-requested event emcees in Honolulu. “;Partying is one thing, but working together is a new bond.”;

Brother Miko is also carving his own niche as a party promoter and as one half of the up-and-coming local electronic duo SoundSex. After Keoki arrived in town last Wednesday, the first gig he played was Miko's “;Pulse”; party at HUSH.

When I arrived just after 2 a.m. that night, all three brothers were in the DJ booth as Keoki worked his techno magic on the turntables. Near the front entrance, two ladies strutted their stuff for guests with nothing more than body paint covering their top halves.

As fellow promoter (and DJ) G-Spot and the Hot Muffins' Echo Aoki looked on, Maleko casually remarked that he wouldn't be surprised if Keoki stayed on the decks until 8 a.m.

“;It's fun to share the stage,”; added Franconi. “;When we're all together, it's always ... magic”; ...

IF DJ MALEKO is a top dog in the Honolulu hosting scene right now (KINE-FM's Billy V also comes to mind), then the Nocturnal Sound Krew enjoy an equivalent presence among local DJs.

Case in point: During last weekend's First Friday festivities, nearly all of the Hawaii-based DJs in the crew had gigs in Chinatown. DJ Logoe was at LOFT, while DJ Eskae held things down at NextDoor and DJ Solution helped welcome new nightspot The Manifest to the neighborhood. DJ Jami was a few blocks away, helping the DoSomethingTonight.com crew celebrate their third anniversary at SoHo Mixed Media Bar.

The NSK domination continued on Saturday, as Logoe and Eskae plugged in their turntables at Sandy Beach to spin during the “;Red Bull Rivals”; surfing contest, while DJ Compose was on the decks during “;Pleasure Lounge”; at the Honolulu Design Center. And on Sunday, Logoe was at Oceans808, while Eskae played out at the Living Room and Jami headlined a '70s theme party at Apartm3nt.

Want to catch the entire NSK all at once? Your best bets are the “;Shake 'N Pop”; or “;Soul Clap”; parties, both at thirtyninehotel ...

Cityside, Kaipo Kapua and Off Da Rock (formerly known as Pohaku) are all scheduled to appear; doors open at 9 p.m. Cover is $15 at the door ... After last visiting in 2007, underground hip-hop star the Grouch returns to NextDoor on Saturday with fellow rapper Eligh and DJ Fresh in tow.
