Work prompts water warning

Leeward Coast residents from Honokai Hale to Makaha are asked to conserve water tonight into tomorrow as Board of Water Supply crews work on a water main connection in the area.

The work is part of the Farrington Highway Phase 1 water system improvement project.

It is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. tonight and last 10 hours, according to a news release.

Reservoirs along the coast will be full, but the 24-inch waterline that brings in about 60 percent of the area's water will be shut down while crews are working.

Residents are asked to use water sparingly and only for priority needs such as cooking, drinking and personal hygiene.

Kauai Council OKs alcohol ban in parks

LIHUE » The Kauai County Council has unanimously approved a bill to ban the overnight consumption of alcohol in county parks and recreational facilities.

The ban from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. would exclude people with camping permits.

The bill was requested by Police Chief Darryl Perry. He says Kauai is the only county in Hawaii that allows drinking in parks.

Last month, Perry told the Police Commission that a previous county ordinance banning drinking in parks was allowed to expire earlier this decade.

The bill introduced by County Councilman Derek Kawakami awaits the signature of Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.

Carvalho's executive assistant, Beth Tokioka, says the mayor's office will be working with various agencies to ensure enforcement is carried out appropriately.

Inouye earns gratitude of Alaska lawmakers

ANCHORAGE, Alaska » Alaska lawmakers have honored Hawaii U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye for his support of their state.

Legislative leaders thanked Inouye this week in Washington, D.C. They cited his support of oil development in Alaska, the state's military and missile defense system, and his approval of reparations for Aleuts who, along with Japanese-Americans, were interred in camps during World War II.

The Alaska lawmakers, led by Senate President Gary Stevens and House Speaker Mike Chenault, presented Inouye with an Alaska state flag flown over the Capitol in Juneau on Jan. 3, the 50th anniversary of Alaska statehood.

Also present were Republican Reps. John Harris and Bill Stoltze, sponsors of a measure proclaiming Inouye's 85th birthday on Sept. 7 as Sen. Daniel Inouye Day in Alaska.

Kailua District Park pool closes for repairs

City officials temporarily closed the Kailua District Park swimming pool yesterday after workers discovered a broken valve on the pool's pumping system. The city expects to reopen the pool next week after repairs are completed.

Tunnel cleaning shuts Likelike Highway lanes

The Honolulu-bound lanes of Likelike Highway between Kahekili Highway in Kaneohe and Valley View Drive in Kalihi will be closed from 7 p.m. tomorrow until 7 a.m. Sunday for tunnel cleaning and maintenance. City buses and emergency vehicles will be let through.

Consent forms are due for flu shots at schools

Parents are reminded by the state Department of Health that signed consent forms are due today for children participating in the Stop Flu at School program.
