Honolulu firefighters battled two brush fires yesterday—one in Waianae and another flare-up on Waiawa Ridge near the northbound lanes of the H-2 freeway.

The Waianae fire, reported at 12:50 p.m. yesterday, scorched about 100 acres.

No structures were immediately threatened in either blaze, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The Waianae fire was located near Ala Hema and Ala Akau streets but did not approach any homes.

About 50 firefighters worked to douse the fire, and a fire helicopter performed water drops.

The 100-acre blaze was fully contained at 8:30 p.m., and fire operations were suspended, Seelig said. The Fire Department planned to monitor the situation overnight for any flare-ups.

About 30 firefighters returned to the Waiawa Ridge fire yesterday morning when the brush fire flared up again near the H-2 freeway and burned five acres. The fire was contained at about 4 p.m. The fire forced the closure of two Haleiwa-bound lanes of the H-2 freeway from about 11:22 a.m. until about 3:15 p.m.
