The lawyer for the man charged with killing 18-year-old Iris Rodrigues-Kaikana says there are problems with the evidence in the case.

“;We have evidence that indicates evidence has been tampered with,”; said Donald Wilkerson, lawyer for Corbit K. Ahn.

Ahn, 29, of Makiki, is charged with second-degree murder for allegedly strangling Rodrigues-Kaikana. He went to Honolulu District Court yesterday, and Judge Paula Devens confirmed bail at $2 million over Wilkerson's objection that the amount is excessive.

Wilkerson said there appear to be significant problems with the Honolulu Police Department's new crime lab, but declined to be more specific. He said he will provide details later.

The Honolulu Police Department declined to comment on Wil- kerson's statement.

The Honolulu prosecutor said the investigation into Rodrigues-Kaikana's death continues and that the office does not comment on ongoing investigations.

Wilkerson might get a chance to challenge the evidence against Ahn as early as tomorrow. That is when Devens scheduled a preliminary hearing to determine whether Ahn will stand trial in state court on the murder charge.

Police said they found Ahn's DNA on various locations of Rodrigues-Kaikana's body.
