Movie menu is big hit for Mavro

By popular demand, chef George Mavrothalassitis has extended his Julia Child tribute menu of Boeuf a la Bourguignonne at his Chef Mavro restaurant, Tuesdays to Saturdays through the end of September.

The Movie Menu features three recipes from the movie “;Julie & Julia”;: Salade Frisee aux Lardons, frisee lettuce with French bacon, poached egg and croutons; Boeuf a la Bourguignonne (braised beef in burgundy wine); and Tarte Tatin, an upside down apple tart with creme fraiche ice cream.

The $59 meal comes with all the Chef Mavro extras, including pre-appetizer, pre-dessert and house-made sweets.

Drink specials are Child's famous “;reverse martini”; for $9 and a wine selection.

Hall of famers cook for benefit

The Hawaii Restaurant Association will welcome the latest inductees to its Hall of Fame with the 2009 Chefs of Aloha gala celebration on Sept. 21.

Honorees are Dennis Franks of Big City Diner, Rodhel Ibay of Sergio's Italian Restaurant, Ronnie Nasuti of Roy's Restaurants-Hawaii, Goran Streng of Tango, Alan Takasaki of Le Bistro, Khamtan Tanhchaleun of Hawaii Prince Hotel and Tony Vierra of Grand Cafe & Bakery.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. and features a dine-around with food stations hosted by the chefs and beverage stations sponsored by Anheuser-Busch, Better Brands and Southern Wine & Spirits. The program will be emceed by Rick Hamada.

Inductees have “;demonstrated dedication and commitment to the growth of the restaurant and food service industry in Hawaii, contributed to the enhancement of its quality and image and demonstrated service through outreach.”;

Isle woman in finals for cranberry recipes

A Pahoa woman earned a spot among the finalists of Ocean Spray's 2009 Ultimate Cranberry Recipe Contest.

Big Isle resident Kara Adanalian will present her Sweet-n-Savory Haricot Verts alongside three other dishes on Oct. 5 in New York City in a live cook-off. Finalists receive a trip for two to New York to cook before judges that include Food Network star Tyler Florence of “;Tyler's Ultimate.”;

The winner will receive $25,000 cash and a year's supply of Ocean Spray products.

Oktoberfest beer, pupu at Don Ho's

German and German-inspired beers and Oktoberfest pupu will be featured at “;Don Ho's Brauhaus,”; the theme for the latest Hops and Grinds beer event at Don Ho's Island Grill at Aloha Tower Marketplace.
