Lee hands off play-calling duties
POSTED: Tuesday, September 08, 2009
Ron Lee has relinquished play-calling duties, but will continue as the Hawaii football team's offensive coordinator, Lee told the Star-Bulletin yesterday.
Quarterbacks coach Nick Rolovich and offensive line coach Gordy Shaw will call the plays from the sidelines beginning with Saturday's game at Washington State. Lee will continue to provide input from the coaches' booth while monitoring the receivers and still has overall responsibility for the offense.
Lee has coached the UH receivers since joining the program in 1999. He was promoted to offensive coordinator last season and said he wanted to put more focus on making corrections with the receivers during the game after reviewing the tape of last Friday's season-opening win over Central Arkansas.
“;We'll still all work together. It's a team effort,”; Lee said. “;I have to concentrate on the receivers. I have to watch the receivers. That is the priority now. When you're calling the plays it's a different feel.
“;I suggested after watching the film that this would be best for the group. (UH head coach Greg McMackin) agreed. ... This will help the offense a lot.”;
Lee said the more critical part of the job comes in preparing the game plan during the week.
“;Ron Lee is still my offensive coordinator,”; McMackin said. “;And he called the winning touchdown (last week), so I'm pretty happy with him.”;
Rolovich is in his second season as quarterbacks coach and has relayed the calls from the sidelines. Shaw is in his first season as offensive line coach and was offensive coordinator at South Dakota last year.
“;(Rolovich is) fine with it. He sees it like we all do and we work well together,”; Lee said.
Craig Stutzmann assisted Lee with the Warriors' receivers as a graduate assistant last season. He accepted a full-time job as receivers coach at Portland State shortly before the start of fall camp.
“;What I found last season and now is it's hard to coach the receivers and call the plays. You don't find all the angles,”; Lee said.
