U.S. boys take 10th place

The U.S. Boys Youth National Volleyball Team, with three Hawaii prep players on the roster, finished the FIVB U-19 World Championship in 10th place after falling to Brazil 27-25, 25-19, 25-27, 25-19 yesterday in Bassano del Grappa, Italy.

Team USA finished with a 5-3 record.

Setter Micah Christenson (Kamehameha) had 15 assists and a kill. Punahou's Taylor Crabb, who moved from outside hitter to libero for the injured Evan Mottram, finished with 12 digs.

Punahou's Josh Taylor played in the second set, but had no kills.

Hawaii Pacific wins in 5 sets

Hawaii Pacific held on to defeat Cal State East Bay 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 24-26, 15-11 last night at the California Clash women's volleyball tournament hosted by San Francisco State.

Kelly Balanay led HPU (3-3) with 16 kills and five blocks, while Sea Warriors libero Tricia Yoshimura added a season-high 26 digs.

Chaminade swept

Chico State stopped Chaminade in three sets last night at the California Clash, 25-12, 25-17, 25-7.

Chaminade (1-5) was led by Courtney Lorusso with seven kills and Tanya Alvino with 18 assists.

Hawaii Hilo takes 2

Hawaii-Hilo held on for a five-set victory against Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) 25-14, 25-17, 28-30, 25-27, 15-9 yesterday at the Nanook Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

The Vulcans were led by Fabiane Seben's match-high 20 kills. Three other Hawaii-Hilo players had 10 or more kills.

The Vulcans then improved to 8-0 for the season by beating Alaska Fairbanks 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 15-9.

Josimara Pinheiro led the way for the Vulcans with 19 kills.

McMaster tops at HPU race

Brigham Young-Hawaii's Brendan McMaster was the men's individual winner at yesterday's Hawaii Pacific Invitational at Kualoa Ranch.

McMaster finished in 24 minutes, 52 seconds.

On the women's side, Theresia Schnurr of Alaska Fairbanks took individual honors in 17:58.

Humboldt State captured the team title in the men's race, followed by Hawaii Pacific in second.

BYUH took top honors in the women's race on the strength of top-10 finishes by Katherine Buxton (fifth), Lacey Krout (sixth) and Allison Shamrell (seventh).

Westmont edges UHH in soccer

Andrew Schneider scored two goals to lead Westmont College to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii-Hilo in men's soccer at Santa Barbara, Calif.

Timothy Glick had the lone goal for the Vulcans (0-4).

The Warriors improved to 2-1.
