Seminary adds class on cult religions

An exploration of “;Modern Cultic Religions”; has been added to the Bible Institute of Hawaii's catalog for the fall semester that begins next weekend.

The Rev. Bong R. Ro, professor of church history and missions at the Hawaii Theological Seminary, will look at some nontraditional Christian and non-Christian belief systems from the perspective of Scriptures and Christian history. The class will meet Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 15, at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Ave.

A lunchtime class for downtown workers will explore Jesus' thoughts and relationship with God the Father in “;The Lord's Prayer.”; Weekly guest speakers will lead the Wednesday noon sessions beginning Sept. 16 at First Hawaiian Bank's 10th-floor conference room.

More than a dozen courses will be offered during the eight-week semester. Weekly evening classes meet at various churches around Oahu. Registration is required. Administration fees are $35 for most classes.

Taize service remembers 9/11 victims

A Taize service of meditative prayer will be held Friday evening in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The 5:30 p.m. service in St. Andrew's Cathedral at Queen Emma Square will follow the pattern of quiet chanted prayer and music used by the monastic community in Taize, France.
