ASHBURN, Va. » Yesterday was a fretful day for the 30 or so Washington Redskins considered to be on the bubble.

“;Time to wait….and wait…oh…and wait!”; came the tweet from quarterback Chase Daniel.

The final audition for jobs had come the night before, when the Redskins lost 24-17 to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team's brain trust spent yesterday huddled in meetings, trying to decide which 22 players to cut before this afternoon's deadline, when the 53-man regular-season roster is set.

The starters barely played against the Jaguars, so the game offered limited insight as to how the Redskins will look when the season opens Sept. 13 against the New York Giants.

There were, however, some interesting developments in the final battles for some roster and position spots, including whether Shaun Suisham can hold off Dave Rayner for the kicking job, who will be the Redskins' No. 2 receiver opposite Santana Moss: Malcolm Kelly, Devin Thomas or Antwaan Randle El and who will be the No. 3 quarterback.

Daniel struggled early, with some of his snaps coming against the Jaguars' first-team defense, but the rookie returned to throw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter after Colt Brennan went down with a bruised knee and tight hamstring. The second-year player from Hawaii had his best game of the preseason, ending a run of three straight games with an interception, and his injuries are minor.

The No. 3 QB competition always seemed to be the incumbent's to lose, but will Brennan's three interceptions cost him the job?

“;That's another heavily discussed item on the docket,”; coach Jim Zorn said.

Favre fined for block

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was fined $10,000 by the NFL for his crack-back block on Houston defensive back Eugene Wilson in a preseason game.

The play happened on Monday night at Houston in Favre's first extensive action since he signed with the Vikings on Aug. 18.

Wilson injured his left knee on the play, and defensive players have long considered that type of block a dirty play.

Bills fire coordinator

Buffalo Bills coach Dick Jauron is committed to sticking with the no-huddle attack entering the regular season—just not with the offensive coordinator who spent the year installing it.

Unhappy with his offense's dismal performance this past month, Jauron fired Turk Schonert yesterday, a day after the Bills closed the preseason with a 17-6 loss to Detroit. Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt will take over the play-calling duties.

“;It was just the lack of productivity and the direction we were moving. I just didn't feel like it was going certainly where I envisioned it,”; Jauron said, at a news conference.

Cards cut 3 from Hawaii

The Arizona Cardinals yesterday released three players with isle ties.

Kahuku and BYU alum Aaron Francisco and former Hawaii standouts Reagan Mauia and Jameel Dowling were among 21 players cut by the team yesterday.

Francisco played defensive back for the team the past four years, while Mauia, a fullback, and Dowling, a cornerback, were in Cardinals camp for the first time.
