Some cinnamon Eggos are being recalled

Better let go of your Eggos, if they're of a certain cinnamon kind.

Kellogg Co. is voluntarily recalling Eggo Toaster Swirlz Cinnamon Roll Minis 8-count package with UPC code 3800023370 with “;Best if Used Before”; date Nov. 15 and Cinnamon Toast Waffles, 10-count package, UPC code 3800040440 with “;Best if Used Before”; dates Nov. 22, 23 and 24.

The state Department of Health said yesterday it has received no reports of illness associated with these products, but out of caution, Kellogg is voluntarily recalling them due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

State officials said consuming food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis.

A person with listeriosis has fever, muscle aches and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea.

State health officials said convulsions can occur, if infection spreads to the nervous system.

Infected pregnant women might experience only a mild, flulike illness, but infections can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, officials said.

Kapolei Library forced to halt passport services

State budget reductions have put a put a halt to passport services at the Kapolei Public Library effective Sept. 15.

The library has halted accepting appointments for the service, the state library said yesterday.

The public library serving the Kalihi-Palama area recently reduced its hours of service, the library said.

Feds to fund waterline work in Lihue

Kauai will receive nearly $2 million in federal stimulus money to replace aging waterlines in Lihue, according to a news release from Kauai County.

The $1.94 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will allow the county to replace waterlines that are 50 to 70 years old, the release said.

Cushnie Construction Co. has been awarded the contract for the Lihue Town Pipeline Replacement Project.

Water Department manager and chief engineer David Craddick said the project will vastly improve the reliability of water service and ensure water quality in Lihue.

The project is scheduled to begin this month and take eight months to complete, the release said.

Work in the business district will take place at night.

“;The purpose of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is to put people back to work and invest in critical infrastructure,”; U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye said in a statement.
