Volunteers gather goodies for troops

Christmas is nearly four months away, but it's not too early to think about sending a little holiday aloha to the troops overseas.

The Aloha Holiday Care Package Collection Drive will kick off its care package campaign from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Windward Mall.

Operation Homefront hopes to collect enough local goodies to put together 500 care packages.

Requested items include Kona coffee, mochi crunch, macadamia nuts, crack seed, cuttlefish, University of Hawaii clothing, Hawaii-themed calendars and slippers.

Operation Homefront will send packages for free to specific friends or family members serving overseas, if donors supply names and APO addresses.

Credit union artifacts wanted

Calling all pack rats. Clean out your file cabinet and you could win $500.

The Hawaii Central Credit Union, founded in 1937, is looking for the oldest dated credit union document that anyone can scrounge up. Member statements, receipts, newsletters or similar documents will be accepted.

Applications must be submitted by tomorrow. Entry forms and information are available at credit union branches or at www.hccu.info.

The winner will be announce on Sept. 12 at Kahala Mall.

Disney animator to talk about 'Bolt'

Kapiolani Community College will host an animation arts lecture featuring Renato dos Anjos, the animation supervisor for Disney Animation Studio. His credits include “;Bolt,”; “;Surf's Up”; and “;Open Season,”; as well as “;Polar Express”; and “;The Haunted Mansion.”;

Before working for Disney Animation, dos Anjos was an animator at Sony Animation and Sony Imageworks.

'Logger's daughter' returns

Terry Nokell returns to Louis Pohl Gallery tomorrow night for “;Fashion-Facing-Fashion,”; a showcase of her diverse work, including clay masks, silver jewelry and original fashions.

The designer from the Pacific Northwest is best known as “;the logger's daughter”; for having grown up around her father's windmill and logging business, while quietly pursuing her own interest to create, first with needle and thread, then pottery.

Combining her two passions, she makes all her ceramic buttons by hand.

Her trunk show will be on view from 4 to 9 p.m., with the mask exhibit continuing through Sept. 26.

She'll also be at Silver Moon Emporium in Haleiwa, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13.

Sales to benefit opera

“;Act 2: A Fashion Reprise”; returns for “;Another Chance for Fashion,”; shopping for gently used designer and casual wear at a great price.

Shorts fabric is recycled plastic

With people searching for more ways to live green, Crazy Shirts wants to help by launching a stylish board shorts line using recycled plastic.

The fabric mimics typical board shorts fabric, but it's made with roughly seven 16-ounce recycled plastic bottles, offering a secondary use for the discarded bottles. The synthetic material is converted into 100 percent polyester polyethylene teraphthalate microfiber.

The $45 men's short features a Velcro-less fly for comfort, as well as hidden side mesh pocket with key fob, logo grommets and drawstring.

The $46 women's version is reversible and has a back pocket with logo grommets and an elastic key fob, as well as a Velcro-closure fly.

Choi creates new nail lacquers

M.A.C's front row-ready nail lacquer is hitting the boutiques in time for New York Fashion Week, marking a collaboration between nail guru Jin Soon Choi, who's worked with designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam, Matthew Williamson and Doo.Ri, as well as photographers Steven Meisel, Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz.

The collection includes an Underlacquer and Overlacquer to strengthen nails, and six opaque shades: Cool Reserve; For Fun; Dance All Night; Rich, Dark, Delicious; Dry Martini; and Beyond Jealous. Choi said she feels particularly strongly about the latter two—a khaki olive and blackened blue green, respectively—which she feels will be the colors for fall 2009.

Choi was also determined to create a polish with enough texture and color that one coat of polish was enough to serve the typical woman who doesn't have time to sit around and wait for multiple coats to dry.

Each lacquer is $12.
