A bracelet once worn by Queen Liliuokalani is on display at Iolani Palace for the first time in celebration of the queen's birthday today.
The gold-colored band is an early example of the Hawaiian heirloom jewelry worn by women today, according to Friends of Iolani Palace. It is embellished with the Hawaiian phrase “;hoomanao mau”;—lasting remembrance—in black enamel.
It was donated by Abigail Kawananakoa, who acquired the bracelet after it was owned by several people since the queen's death in 1917.

Queen Liliuokalani in-structed that her jewelry be sold after her death to benefit a trust fund for the establishment of an orphanage. The bracelet was one of an engraved pair that sold for $105 in the 1924 auction of the queen's jewelry.
According to an inventory taken after her death, the other bracelet was marked with the phrase “;R. Naiu,”; indicating royalty.
