Sixth prison worker indicted on sex charge

WHEELWRIGHT, Ky. » A sixth worker at a private women's prison in eastern Kentucky has been indicted on a sex-related charge.

A Floyd County grand jury indicted corrections officer Charles Prater, 54, yesterday for first-degree rape. The indictment alleges that Prater assaulted an inmate on June 13 at the Wheelwright facility, the Courier-Journal reports.

Since 2006 five other workers have been accused of misdemeanor sexual abuse charges, but Prater's case is the first to allege a felony. Four defendants have been convicted, and the fifth is to go to trial this month.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corp. of America owns the prison. Last month, Hawaii announced it was taking out the 168 inmates it houses at the prison. Hawaii officials are conducting their own investigation into sexual assault allegations.

Alleged sex assault involves Kamehameha students

Police and Kamehameha Schools are investigating allegations of a sexual assault.

Kamehameha Schools issued a statement saying the schools and police are investigating “;a situation involving several Kamehameha Middle School students”; that was reported to school officials early Monday.

The internal investigation by Kamehameha Schools is looking into potential violations of its student code of conduct to determine potential disciplinary action involving minors, the statement said.

Kamehameha Schools said because the case involves minors, it would not publicly release any further information.

Kealakekua man identified as victim in Big Isle crash

Big Island police have identified a 56-year-old pedestrian who died from injuries sustained in a crash Friday as Adatchie K. Eaton of Kealakekua.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 190 and Kalaoa Road in North Kona. Eaton was walking north on Route 190 on the mauka shoulder of the road when a Honda sedan, driven by a 58-year-old Kailua-Kona man, struck him from behind, police said.

Police have opened a negligent-homicide investigation.

Police seek information in Wailuku Drive burglaries

Wailuku Drive in Hilo was struck with a rash of burglaries in August, Big Island police said.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the burglaries call officer Donovan Kohara at 935-2213 or the nonemergency line at 961-8300.

Head-on crash in Haleiwa leaves 2 badly injured

One man was in critical condition and another in serious condition after two cars collided head-on yesterday near Haleiwa.

Police said a 30-year-old male driver of a black 1997 two-door Acura crossed a double solid line on Kamehameha Highway between the Helemano Military Reservation intersection and the J.P. Leong Bypass, 2.5 miles north of Paalaa Uka Pupukea Road.

The Acura collided at about 7:28 a.m. with an oncoming orange 2008 four-door Honda sedan, driven by a 35-year-old Haleiwa man.

Police said the Acura driver was critically injured and his passenger, a 16-year-old girl, was in good condition, while the Honda driver was in serious condition. All occupants of both cars were taken to the Queen's Medical Center, police said.

Gunshot killed woman found on vacant property

The Medical Examiner's Office has determined that a 26-year-old Waianae woman found on vacant property in Waianae died of a shotgun wound to the chest.

Nicole U. Barrett was found unresponsive by her girlfriend at 10:15 p.m. Saturday and was pronounced dead early Sunday morning, police said.

The Medical Examiner's Office deferred a finding in the manner of death pending further investigation but said the woman had used methamphetamine. Police are continuing their investigation into the death, which was classified yesterday as an unattended death.

Male suspect is wanted in Wahiawa robbery

Police are looking for a man in his 20s who robbed another 20-year-old man at gunpoint Monday night in Wahiawa.

Police said the victim was walking on a sidewalk at 11:30 p.m. when a vehicle stopped nearby and the passenger got out, brandishing a handgun. Police said the suspect demanded the victim's possessions.

The victim turned over his property, and the suspect fled in a waiting vehicle, police said.
