Tokuda takes the blame

Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda and his staff, who have some of the more sophisticated offensive schemes in Hawaii high school football, are giving senior quarterback Andrew Manley a lot of play-calling responsibility.

In Saturday's 28-21 loss to No. 1 Saint Louis, Manley called about 60 percent of the plays. He passed for nearly 200 yards against one of the state's top defensive units and had only one interception.

Tokuda said that quick pass into the flat wasn't Manley's fault.

“;The one interception was my call,”; Tokuda said of the pick for six points by Saint Louis linebacker Starr Sua-Passi.

The Crusaders gathered 25 of 32 possible first-place votes to retain its top ranking in today's Star-Bulletin Football Top 10. Leilehua is No. 8.

Big foot

Hilo's Christian Daog caused quite a stir a couple of weeks ago when he drilled a 57-yard field goal against Kamehameha.

It was the only scoring of the game in the Vikings' 44-3 loss, but that kick is believed to be the longest field goal in Hawaii high school history. Daog, a junior, is a part-time quarterback and is a soccer player, too.

“;That 57-yard one, that was a shot, a low kick,”; Hilo athletic director Leroy Simms said. “;It just cleared the crossbar.”;

Daog follows in the footsteps of Tai Izawa, who now kicks at Columbia.
