Hilo's Igawa wins USGA qualifier

Hilo's Chris Igawa shot 72 to win the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship Qualifier yesterday at the Makaha Resorts Golf Club.

Mark Scheibach earned the first-alternate spot after beating Kaneohe's David Long in a playoff. Both golfers shot 75.

Long advances to the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship on Oct. 3-8 in Kiawah Island, S.C.

UC San Diego beats Hawaii-Hilo

Evan Walker, Brandon Yee and Jared Kukura scored for UC San Diego in a 3-2 win over Hawaii-Hilo in yesterday's men's soccer match at La Jolla, Calif.

Logan Montenegro scored twice for the Vulcans, including one in the 87th minute to pull within one.

Dane Kaylor and Ivan Mercado split equal time in goal and had two saves each for UH-Hilo.

Ingram wins snapper's job

The New England Patriots released long snapper Nathan Hodel yesterday, leaving rookie Jake Ingram, a sixth-round draft pick from Hawaii, to handle that job.

Ingram, a Mililani graduate who is one of 21 Hawaii alums on NFL rosters as the final cutdown day approaches, was the only long snapper taken 198th overall in April's NFL Draft. Teams have until Saturday to get their rosters down to the 53 players they will enter the season with.

Hodel, the long snapper on last year's NFC champion Arizona Cardinals, was signed as a free agent in March.

UH moves up to No. 4 in poll

The Hawaii women's volleyball team finished off August on a high note with a move up the rankings and a conference player of the week award.

The Rainbow Wahine (3-0), off to their best start since 2005, rose three spots to No. 4 in the AVCA rankings. Ahead of Hawaii is defending NCAA champion Penn State, followed by Texas and Washington.

Rounding out the top 10 are Florida, Nebraska, Michigan, Illinois, UCLA and Cal.

Kanani Danielson was named the most outstanding player of last week's Chevron Invitational and earned her first WAC player of the week honor. The sophomore hitter had 54 kills, 19 digs and 11 blocks over three matches.

This week, Hawaii hosts the Hawaiian Airlines Classic, which features No. 5 Texas, No. 10 Cal and No. 19 Saint Louis.

UH baseball adds recruits

Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso rounded out his 2010 recruiting class with four more recruits yesterday.

UH added outfielder Collin Bennett from Tacoma (Wash.) Community College, pitcher Zach Gallagher from Columbia Basin (Wash.), catcher David Freitas from Cosumnes (Calif.) River College and Blair Walters from Ventura (Calif.) College.

Bennett and Gallagher were late signees, while Freitas and Walters both signed in July.

Bennett hit .391 as a sophomore with five home runs and 27 runs scored. Gallagher earned first team All-NWAACC honors after going 11-1 with a 1.08 ERA in 92 innings pitched.

Freitas led his team in batting (.333), home runs (nine), runs scored (36) and RBIs (43) in 2009, while Walters finished last season with a 5-4 record and 3.43 ERA in 78 2/3 innings.

A total of 10 players make up this year's class. Joining the four mentioned are Trent Allianic (Kauai), Breland Almadova ('Iolani), Kalani Brackenridge (Kapolei), Derek Brown (Woodstock, Ill.), Piikea Kitamura (Kamehameha) and Randy Yard (Central Arizona JC).
