Tenzing says Wahine put in poor performance in 4-1 win

Soccer tends to be a sport where the final score says the least about the actual game.

While Hawaii took lots of positives out of its loss to No. 2 Stanford last week, coach Pinsoom Tenzing was very upset with his team following a 4-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific yesterday in the Hawaii College Soccer Showcase at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

“;They played really, really badly,”; Tenzing said. “;If we continue to play like this, we're going to be in big trouble against a Division I team.”;

The final statistics show a one-sided game, as Hawaii (1-1-1) took 24 shots to Hawaii Pacific's six. HPU goalkeeper Carianne Makino had nine saves on 13 shots on goal, and the Sea Warriors (2-1) could only test Hawaii's goal-keeping duo of Kristina Ehrett and Kanani Taaca with three shots on net.

But compared to the 11-0 drubbing the Rainbow Wahine handed Hawaii Pacific in their last meeting in 2007, Hawaii looked out of sorts.

“;They needed to bring the same mentality they had last week (vs. Stanford and BYU) against HPU,”; Tenzing said. “;When you don't bring that mentality, you're in trouble.”;

The mood was much brighter on the other side of the field, as the Sea Warriors were a much-improved team from the last time they faced Hawaii.

“;UH is a very good team and a very established program and I was very proud of my girls that they gave the crowd a good game,”; Hawaii Pacific coach Michelle Nagamine said. “;For us to score a goal in the second half after being down says a lot about their character.”;

Hawaii led 4-0 when HPU freshman Amber Fuller took advantage of a rare chance to score on an empty net. Taylor Hoesterey threaded a perfect pass to Fuller. She put a quick move on Taaca and dribbled right past her before pushing an easy shot into the back of the goal in the 82nd minute.

“;It shows that we have a very bright future,”; Nagamine said. “;It's hard to play when you're not used to a certain level of intensity and a sense of urgency that Hawaii brings, and for us to come away with a goal, I definitely take my hat off to them.”;

Britta Bourne scored two goals and Chelsea Deptula and Vanessa Bailey added one apiece for Hawaii, which raced out to a 2-0 first-half lead. Bourne's second goal of the season came in the 22nd minute off a long pass from Brittani Lum. Deptula added her goal in the 40th minute on a header off a pass from Rachel Domingo as Hawaii outshot the Sea Warriors 12-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Bourne added Hawaii's third goal 5 minutes into the second half and Vanessa Bailey capped Hawaii's offense with an unassisted goal in the 54th minute. Hawaii stays home for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic next week, in which it will host Alabama-Birmingham on Friday and Pacific on Sunday.
