Wie fourth at Safeway Classic

Honolulu's Michelle Wie closed with a bogey-free 66 yesterday at the Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore., to earn her sixth top-10 finish in 14 events this season.

Wie had six birdies against no bogeys to shoot an 11-under 206 and tied for fourth with Ai Miyazato and Seon Hwa Lee. It earned her $72,896 to run her season total to $583,182, good enough for 17th on tour.

For the tournament, Wie hit 24 fairways and 42 greens in regulation. She averaged 276.3 yards off the tee and needed 86 putts. She will return to Stanford for school on Sept. 28.

Adolpho will play hoops at Hawaii

Molokai's multi-sport standout, Kalei Adolpho, has given a verbal commitment to play basketball and volleyball for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine.

Adolpho, a 6-foot-1 junior, will be on a basketball scholarship, per NCAA rules.

Seben earns conference honor

Hawaii-Hilo senior middle hitter Fabiane Seben is the Pacific West Conference player of the week.

Seben led the Vulcans to a 3-0 record last week, finishing with 52 points on 38 kills, six aces, two block solos and 11 block assists.

Kelly Balanay of Hawaii Pacific, Tanza Buroker of Brigham Young-Hawaii, Katie Swenson of UH-Hilo and Chaminade's Pisila Tukia were also up for the award.

PacWest teams will be busy this week.

Brigham Young-Hawaii is participating in a tournament in Ellensburg, Wash., beginning Wednesday while Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade begin different tournaments in California on Thursday. UH-Hilo is in Fairbanks, Alaska, for a tournament beginning Friday but will play on the West Coast early in the week.

The Seasiders and Vulcans have opened the season 3-0 and the Sea Warriors are 2-1. Chaminade is 1-2.

Chaminade loses in soccer

Westminster (Salt Lake City) topped host Chaminade 4-1 in women's soccer yesterday.

Megan Maldonado, Brinna Bennion, Tanisia Wilson and Rachel Watson scored the goals for the Griffins (1-4).

Whitney Williams scored the lone goal for Chaminade (0-2), heading in a corner kick by Casey Boggioni.
